VESA Local Bus video chips/cards benchmark test results

Test setup: 4DMS=HL3G-L4-VI (SiS 85C471 ST) motherboard, in BIOS "load setup defaults" what I have done; Intel DX4 OverDrive (DX4ODPR100) CPU; 8MB FPM memory (originally I have started with 64MB memory, but Wintune 2.0 produces "Division by zero" with 64MB memory); 256KB motherboard (level 2) cache.
I chose this motherboard for this test because it has the best compatibility with the cards among my VLB motherboards (you see this on a table).
Software environment: MS-DOS 6.22, only HIMEM.SYS (from MS-DOS 6.22) has loaded (and I have run benchmarks from command promt, not from a commander/shell); or MS-DOS 6.22 + HINEN.SYS and Windows 3.1 with Win32s 1.30 and WinG 1.0

My tests doesn't match (not "compatible") with other 486 benchmarks, because I didn't want to compare my results to other people's results, but I wanted to compare the cards to each other, for example the Doom II and Quake tests are fullscreen.
I don't have many VLB cards, I focused on collecting rarer, untested cards. You can find results for the more common cards on other pages like https://dependency-injection.com/vlb-vga-group-test/.

Note: On most VLB system even with the fastest BIOS settings, it usually still slow to reach 35 frames per second (the capped frame per second for gameplay of the Doom 1 and 2), with graphic detail: high; fullscreen -1 (with status bar); General Midi music and Sound Blaster Sound FX with 8 number of sound effects to mix:

Notes:
The 'Doom II for Windows' results stand out from the rest: they are much closer to the DOS version's performance. Additionally, CHIPS cache DRAM has no measurable effect on Doom II for Windows, whereas it shows a clear impact in all other tests.
You can install the plain ET4000 driver for the ET4000/W32P, but it will perform much slower. I did not include this driver in the benchmark.
I cannot start my ATI Mach32 (ATI Graphics Ultra Pro) card under Windows. It seems my card is faulty.

Windows 3.1 - 16 million colors

In 16 million colors the WinBench 96: Graphics WinMark 96 test took too long, so I changed the test setup a bit: still 4DMS=HL3G-L4-VI (SiS 85C471 ST) motherboard, but with fastest BIOS settings as possible for each card; AMD Am5x86-P75 133 CPU; 16MB FPM memory; still 256KB motherboard (level 2) cache.

All 16-million-color Windows 3.1 benchmarks




1: For LCD/TFT monitor, in driver setup, select generic monitor.



2: The number on the percentage bar in the WinG display performance test is unreadable.



3: You have to install this driver before installing WinG.



4: There is a small color problem in the WinG display performance test and WinG applications (like WinDoom) when using 256 colors.



5: This driver includes Windows 3.11 *.FON files (23pcs), these are not work with Windows 3.1. For 3.1 you should replace driver installer *.FO_ files to 3.1 ones, or before driver install backup your *.FON files and after driver install restore them.



6: If the system boots using the Adaptec AHA-1542CF SCSI controller, garbage pixels appear in all video modes while the HDD is active/loading and the screen content changes (like moving the mouse cursor). With an IDE HDD, it is OK.

7: This card produces random green pixels in 16 million color mode. I tested it with different memory chips and motherboards, but the problem remained.



8: This driver (or card) has serious color problem in 16 million color mode.





I have tested Doom II For Windows 95 on Windows 95, but much slower than Doom II For Windows 3.1 so I have dropped Win95 benchmarks.
