Sierra On-Line (Adventure) Game/Interpreter Version List Version 0.94 [23-Dec-09] by HWM _____________________________________________________________________________ ( Table of Contents ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 1 - Updates 2 - Intro 3 - AGI games 3.1 - AGI0 3.2 - AGI1 3.3 - AGI2 3.4 - AGI3 4 - SCI games 4.1 - SCI0 4.2 - SCI01 (S.OLD) 4.3 - SCI1 4.3.1 - 1990 4.3.2 - First half of 1991 4.3.3 - Second half of 1991 4.4 - SCI11 4.5 - SCI32 4.6 - Unknown versions 5 - Possible entries 6 - Some sort of a FAQ to wrap things up 7 - Exclusions 8 - Legal _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [1] Updates ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 0.94 - Added Hero's Quest v1.001, a (the?) beta version of Space Quest 4, alternative versions of both Hoyle SCI0 games, German and French versions of some games, mostly SCI32. Corrected the King's Quest 4 v2.2 entry to v2.3. Apparently this version (2.2) does exist, but I only have v2.3 in my collection (which mistakenly was listed in Possible Entries, so they're swapped now) Corrected the Hoyle Classic Games entry (it had a wrong build date), King's Quest 1.000.106 (interpreter version 0.000.247 instead of 0.000.274) and EcoQuest 2 (Windows interpreter version 1.001.069.1 instead of 1.001.069.2). Corrected the placement of version notes to be more consistent. Removed the "(Windows release)" addition from individual releases, it's added to the interpreter now, next to the build date. Removed Quest for Glory (Japanese) from Possible Entries, it exists, but isn't IBM PC compatible. Added some extra info on Quest for Glory 2 v0.101 & v1.105 (SCIV.OLD) Spelling, wording and some other small corrections. 0.93 - Reorganized the SCI01/SCI1 section: Revised all SCI01 games and placed most entries under SCI1, after some testing. The only interpreters still placed under SCI01 are the S.OLD ones: they are incompatible with both SCI0 and SCI1 games and therefore applicable for a separate branch. The SCI1 section is now roughly split in three sections: 1990, first half of 1991 and second half of 1991. Added alternative versions of Dr. Brain's Castle, Dagger of Amon Ra, Hoyle's Book of Games Volume 1 and the EGA version of Mixed-Up Fairy Tales. Added a whole bunch of SCI0 demos and a King's Quest 7 demo. Added a couple of German versions. Some small changes to possible entries and such. 0.92 - Added Dr. Brain EGA, Conquest of the Longbow EGA, Space Quest 4 EGA Spanish, yet another version of KQ4, some previously missed SCI11 Windows interpreters, Hoyle Classic Games (which I incorrectly assumed to be the same as Hoyle Classic Card Games), an online SCI32 game "The Realm" (which I incorrectly assumed to be a LSCI game), a couple of SCI32 interpreters with debug mode included, a demo for Torin's Passage, a demo for Shivers, a different demo for Lighthouse, a King's Quest 6 CD demo, a demo for Hoyle Classic Card Games, a German version of QfG4 and noticed a difference between two Quest for Glory 4 demos. The SCI11 and SCI32 section now include and are sorted on build dates of the interpreter. Thanks to Nick Sonneveld for sending me a list of SCI11 build dates to expand. Added the 2.100.001 "branch" of SCI32: The two games that use it were incorrectly placed under 2.100.002. Renamed "Hoyle's Classic" to "Hoyle's Classic Card Games", since that is in fact the full title and needed to seperate it from the newly discovered SCI32 game "Hoyle's Classic Games". Added some extra info I discovered on Donald Duck's Playground. Added some possible entries. Added some exclusions. 0.91 - Corrected a SCI01 entry, SQ5 beta, JONESCD. Renamed "Hoyle's Card Games" to "Hoyle's Book of Games". Added another version of KQ4, added two new AGI demo's. 0.9 - First public release _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [2] Intro ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This is a version list I typed up in some spare time. It's not complete, but I suspect most games are somewhat covered by now. Also, it only deals with PC versions of the game, other platforms are not covered. This has two reasons: 1. They don't interest me as much. 2. I do not have THAT much spare time. The titles are defined as the following: 1. Name of game 3. Notes on version (e.g. "SCI Remake", "AKA name", "CD Version") 2. Version number 4. Language (If other than english. Multiple entries means bilingual) 5. Date [mm/dd/yy] (If found in game/text/etc. - No filedates) Example: Leisure Suit Larry 1 VGA (SCI remake) 1.0 [Spanish/English] [date] I do not use filedates, because of the simple fact that I do not find them reliable enough. Many of the games have lost their original filedates due to copying/zipping/whatever, some have been cracked/patched or added an intro or a text from a guy named Toni who sells games from his house in Zagreb and tells me I shouldn't worry about the war and just send money, etc. Anyway, I've even encountered official Sierra releases, being exact same versions with different filedates (one or two days later), so I didn't feel like including it. Optional comments, that do not fit the given categories above, are located at the bottom of the section containing the game. They are marked with asterisks, which are placed at the end of the line of the game. Example: Police Quest 2 1.001.000 [11/26/1988] * [rest of section] * - QA file claims int. ver 0.000.397 AGI/SCI0(1)/SCI1 games are sorted on interpreter version, except for the ancient AGI0 and AGI1 interpreters, since they do not use proper version numbering! SCI11/SCI32 games are sorted on build date of their interpreter. _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [3] AGI games ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ AGI0 & AGI1 originally were available on: - IBM PC (including PCjr & TANDY) - Apple ][ AGI2 & AGI3 originally were available on: - IBM PC (including PCjr & TANDY) - Apple ][ / Apple ][GS - Apple Macintosh - Atari ST - Coco 3 (TRS-80 Color) - Commodore AMIGA - NEC PC-9801(?) No official translations known. If a game is marked with an * it means that the game has been shipped on both 3.5" & 5.25" disks, meaning the same version spread over more/less VOL files. Example: Gold Rush! 2.01 - 3.5" version: Gold Rush! 2.01 - 5.25" version: GRVOL.0 78.086 bytes GRVOL.0 25.070 bytes GRVOL.1 552.584 bytes GRVOL.1 207.528 bytes GRVOL.2 556.217 bytes GRVOL.2 125.702 bytes GRVOL.3 279.567 bytes GRVOL.4 259.527 bytes GRVOL.5 227.102 bytes GRVOL.9 26.174 bytes GRVOL.10 20.612 bytes GRVOL.11 10.123 bytes GRVOL.12 3.976 bytes AGI games are backwards compatible for minor releases, except for version 1. The major releases v2 and v3 are not directly compatible, but the major change is mostly the difference in file format, so AGIv2 games can work with an AGIv3 interpreter when converted into the AGIv3 file format. AGIv0 is technically not really an interpreter, but is mainly included as a container category for the first versions of the first release of King's Quest. _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [3.1] AGI0 ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ King's Quest 1 (IBM) King's Quest 1 (PCjr) King's Quest 1 (TANDY) 01.01.00 _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [3.2] AGI1 ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Black Cauldron 1.1J (Uses AGI 1.12) Black Cauldron 1.1K (Uses AGI 1.12) Black Cauldron 1.1K (Uses AGI 1.12) (Licensed by Tandy) Black Cauldron 1.1M (Uses AGI 1.12) King's Quest 2 1.0W King's Quest 2 1.1H _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [3.3] AGI2 ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 2.001 - Donald Duck's Playground 1.0Q [6/9/86] ** 2.089 - Space Quest 1 1.0 *** Space Quest 1 1.0X 2.272 - King's Quest 1 1.0U King's Quest 3 1.01 [11/08/86] Sierra Christmas Card 1986 Space Quest 1 1.1A 2.277 - Space Quest 1 & King's Quest 3 Demo 2.411 - King's Quest 2 2.1 2.425 - AGI Demo 1 (AKA 5) [05/87] King's Quest 1 2.0F 2.426 - King's Quest 2 2.2 Space Quest 1 2.2 2.435 - King's Quest 3 2.00 [5/25/87] 2.439 - Black Cauldron 2.00 [6/14/87] 2.440 - Leisure Suit Larry 1 1.00 [6/1/87] 2.903 - Police Quest 1 2.0A [10/23/87] * 2.911 - Police Quest 1 2.0A [10/23/87] * 2.912 - Space Quest 2 2.0A * 2.913 - AGI Tandy Demo (AKA Sierra Demos II) (for Radio Shack(?)) This is because this interpreter does not cover special characters like accent grave, accent egu, umlaut, etc. The SCI0 games that are translated are converted to the hybrid SCI01, or S.OLD. "OLD" probably referring to the fact that SCI1 was already developed and this fork was based on the "old" SCI0 interpreter. All the SCI0(1) games are released on both 3.5" & 5.25" disks, except the demos and such. I'm not sure about the later SCI1(1) games, I think SCI1 games were released on 3.5" and 5.25", while SCI11 were merely on 3.5" or CD-ROM. All the games listed are disk versions unless noted else. SCI1 games were released in two versions: 16 color EGA and 256 color VGA versions. The 16 color versions look less appealing and are also smaller in size, compared to their 256 color counterparts. They were targeted at people with CGA/EGA/TANDY videocards and a low-memory setup. SCI11 ended this tradition by adding an EGA graphics driver. SCI0(1) interpreters are backwards compatible like AGI. SCI01 interpreters are incompatible with SCI0 and SCI1 interpreters, yet seems to contain features of both. For somewhat "historical" reasons I've kept the "SCI01" name, although "S.OLD" would now certainly be more fitting. Later SCI1, SCI11 and SCI32 might occasionly be backwards compatible, but more often the games get too buggy to play. Notable exceptions are the earliest SCI1 games (released in 1990), which still are backwards compatible. _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [4.1] SCI0 ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 0.000.247 - King's Quest 4 1.000.106 [9/19/1988] 0.000.274 - King's Quest 4 1.000.111 [9/24/1988] 0.000.294 - Sierra Christmas Card 1988 1.04 [10/05/1988] 0.000.343 - Leisure Suit Larry 2 1.000.011 [10/27/1988] 0.000.395 - Police Quest 2 1.001.000 [11/26/1988] * 0.000.409 - King's Quest 4 1.003.006 Leisure Suit Larry 2 1.002.000 [1/11/1989] Police Quest 2 1.001.006 [12/14/1988] 0.000.413 - Police Quest 2 DEMO 0.000.453 - Astro Chicken Space Quest 3 1.0P [03/22/1989] Space Quest 3 1.0V [04/13/1989] Space Quest 3 1.0V/int Space Quest 3 DEMO 1.0A [03/23/1989] x.yyy.zzz - Colonel's Bequest DEMO 0.000.490 - Police Quest 2 1.002.011 0.000.494 - King's Quest 4 DEMO 0.000.502 - King's Quest 4 1.006.003 [6/12/1989] King's Quest 4 1.006.004 [8/7/1989] 0.000.506 - Fun Seeker's Guide 1.02 0.000.519 - Hoyle's Book of Games Volume 1 1.000.104 0.000.530 - Hoyle's Book of Games Volume 1 1.000.113 Leisure Suit Larry 3 DEMO 0.249 [09/22/1989] 0.000.566 - Hero's Quest 1.000 Hero's Quest 1.001 0.000.572 - Hoyle's Book of Games Volume 2 1.000.011 Leisure Suit Larry 3 1.003 [10/27/1989] Leisure Suit Larry 3 1.021 [01/27/1990] 0.000.629 - Hero's Quest 1.102 Quest for Glory 1 1.200 ** 0.000.631 - Colonel's Bequest 1.000.046 0.000.668 - Codename: ICEMAN 1.023 Conquests of Camelot DEMO 0.007 Hoyle's Book of Games Volume 1 1.000.115 Hoyle's Book of Games Volume 2 1.000.016 0.000.685 - Conquests of Camelot 1.001.000 Codename: ICEMAN 1.033 Codename: ICEMAN DEMO Mixed-Up Mother Goose 1.011 Space Quest 3 1.018 x.yyy.zzz - Leisure Suit Larry 2 DEMO * - QA file claims interpreter version 0.000.397 ** - Original SCI0 re-release of Hero's Quest under another name _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [4.2] SCI01 (S.OLD) ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ S.old.010 - King's Quest (SCI remake) 1.000.051 King's Quest (SCI remake) DEMO S.old.114 - Leisure Suit Larry 3 [German/English] 0.001 [01/07/1991] Space Quest 3 [German/English] 1.052 S.old.123 - Leisure Suit Larry 3 [French/English] 1.050 _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [4.3] SCI1 ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This list is not completely chronological, since the version numbering scheme used seems pretty inconsistent. The interpreters are roughly categorized in three "generations": 1990, first half of 1991 and second half of 1991. I've based this on certain features shared among interpreters and the release dates of the games. So there is some sort of structure and chronological order, however, don't rely on it too much. The 1990 SCI1-interpreters are still backwards compatible like SCI0. However, when swapping certain interpreters, the video modes have to comply. The interpreter used with Jones in the Fast Lane is probably the earliest version, therefore first in the list. _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [4.3.1] SCI1 - 1990 ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ x.yyy.zzz - Jones in the Fast Lane EGA 1.000.060 * x.yyy.zzz - Jones in the Fast Lane VGA 1.000.060 * 0.001.026 - Quest for Glory 2 0.101 ** **** 1.000.041 - Quest for Glory 2 1.000 ** 1.000.046 - Quest for Glory 2 DEMO *** 1.000.058 - King's Quest 5 EGA 0.000.055 1.000.060 - King's Quest 5 VGA 0.000.051 King's Quest 5 VGA 0.000.062 1.000.072 - Quest for Glory 2 1.102 ** Quest for Glory 2 1.105 ** 1.000.073 - King's Quest 5 EGA 0.000.062 1.000.087 - Quest for Glory 2 1.105 ** ***** 1.000.172 - Sierra Christmas Card 1990 EGA *** 1.000.174 - Sierra Christmas Card 1990 VGA *** * - Includes debugger ** - Includes parser *** - Includes debugger and parser **** - VERSION file on the first disk lists version 1.00, VERSION files on the other disks list version 0.101. Most of these titles often have the usual filenames (RESOURCE, etc.) but they do not use the AGI/SCI interpreter Accolade adventures: - Altered Destiny - Les Manley series Use a VERY remniscant engine, got sued for it, stated in Les Manley, I believe. Tsunami games: - Blue Force - Ringworld series Tsunami was founded by ex-Sierra programmers. Early Sierra CD titles: - Leisure Suit Larry 5 (CD release) Same as disk versions. Post-1997 Sierra games: - Gabriel Knight 3 - Quest for Glory 5 - (every Sierra game after '97) After 1997, the SCI engine (and pretty much the adventure genre in general) was abandoned. These games are AGI or SCI (but were not included because...): - Every Russian translation - Every Chinese translation - Every translated AGI game - Every translated SCI0 game - Certain translated SCI1+ games As far as I know, these are all hacks. However, I'm not fully sure about later (SCI32) Russian ones, as some say they were indeed translated and sold officially. _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [7] Some sort of a FAQ to wrap things up ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ You haven't included the other Donald Duck's Playground versions?! Donald Duck's Playground PC was OFFICIALLY released on a booter, version 1.0Q, combined with AGI v2.001! The 1.0A and the 1.0C version floating around are "hacked" copies. 1.0A is an Atari ST version, combined with a 2.272 PC interpreter and has no sound & menu. This version could be downloaded from The Underdogs. 1.0C is an Amiga version, which uses the same interpreter as 1.0A and pushing ESC (to access the menu) results in "Bad action 161". This version is available for download at www.allowe.com. What's NEWSCIV? And why are there no Russian translations on the list?! The Russian AGI/SCI games are all (pretty well done) hacks. NEWSCIV is infact a regular SCI interpreter, but with some intro (Taralej & Jabocrack SoftWare presents:) attached to it. Could you send me *NAME OF THE GAME*??? I'd rather not, unless you either have interesting material for me or are planning to start some sort of public Sierra archive. _____________________________________________________________________________ ( [8] Legal ) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ This FAQ is copyright (c)2002-2009 by HWM.
