ATI 3D Rage - ATI3DCIF API - chip and driver compatibility matrix

ATI 3D CIF is available on DOS (coded into game executable) and Windows.
Windows version of ATI 3D CIF (ati3dcif.dll) requires Windows 95 (Win9x/ME)
and requires MACXW4 driver (or atim64; ati_m64; atir3) version 4.02.0229 or later (in some cases early ATI2DDAD drivers are also good)
and compatible video chip (Rage Mobility, Rage128 and laters are not compatible).

ati.com servers are offline so I have uploaded all ATI3DCIF compatible drivers to here.

Actua Soccer: Semi-Finals
The Actua Soccer: Semi-Finals ATI 3D RAGE version was bundled with with IBM computers based on Ati Rage II family video card.
This game have a Win9x installer, but the game itself is a DOS game, needs DOS or DOS mode (with DOS CD-ROM and mouse drivers).

MechWarrior 2
The MechWarrior 2 ATI 3D RAGE Edition 1.0 was bundled with Ati 3D Xpression (the first and only card with the first 3D Rage chip).

"This was the first 3D version to be released and also appears to be [by far] the most highly produced. The Rage version was first previewed to the public in May of 1996 at the E3 Show in Los Angeles."

ATI3DCIF API benchmarks

1: rpexpl2.exe and rpexpl4.exe are usually freezes on the Rage I; the Rage LT and the Rage II family.

2: Works on the Rage LT and the Rage II family too but there is problem with texture narrowing as same as Rage Pro with older ati3dcif.dll than 4.10.2640 (see this in the Youtube video at 0:55).

3: These programs can run on the Rage LT and the Rage II family too but graphics chips in the Rage II family (even Rage IIc chip too) have no blending, clamping, modulation and specular capabilities so these effects are missing.

4: Rage XL (AGP only) with ATI3DCIF API supported by only MACXW4 4.11.2573 and 4.11.2582 beta divers with ati3dcif.dll 4.11.2692. For these sample programs you will need to downgrade macxdd16.dll and macxdd32.dll files to version 4.11.5029 or older or you can download my downgraded Rage XL AGP driver package: ATI_3D_CIF_compatible_Rage_XL_(AGP_only)_driver_for_Win9x-ME_r4.zip

5: Knight Morph works with MACXW4 driver 4.10.2278 or later with ati3dcif.dll 4.10.2640 or later too, but the texture blending/fading is not correct, looks different.

As you can see three of the sample programs work without problems only by ati3dcif.dll 4.10.2628 but some other programs fail with this version like ATI3DCIF version of the Tomb Raider. I have made a multiple ati3dcif.dll test: I have left the older one (4.10.2628) in the Windows\System and the later one (4.10.2640) ati3dcif.dll I have copied directly to the game directory (C:\Tombraid) and works. The Tomb Raider uses the 4.10.2640 one and the samples are using the system default.

1: A registry string here -> "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\DISPLAY\ATI\ReleaseVersion"

2: If you have an earlier version of DirectX than requirements of the display driver you will got this error message:
Fatal error #50: SYSERR_VFXDRIVER: Error occurred finding or loading VFX driver (DLL): Error profiling video modes.

3: Might not work with DirectX 3.0

4: On Windows 95 (all Win95 versions) you must wait a bit more than 1 minute when installer writes "Please wait while Setup initializes...".

5: The w95-2312.exe installer not run under Win98/Me but you can run the w52312en.exe installer that has the same drivers included that works without problem on Win98/Me also.

6: This graphics chip does not supported by the installer but you can install the driver on Display Properties or Device Manager (the installer extracts the driver before the error message).

7: In Windows "32-bit" color mode (true color) there are display problems in game menu (I recommend you to use 256 color mode because ATI3DCIF games are use 256 colors).

8: Rage XL is not supported. You need to downgrade the "ati3dcif.dll" to version 4.11.2692
for Rage XL (AGP only) you can download the modified 4.11.2573 driver with downgraded "ati3dcif.dll", (and downgraded macxdd16.dll, macxdd32.dll too) and expanded .inf file made by me:

9: In Windows "32-bit" color mode (true color) there are texture errors in the menu of the game (but you shouldn't use 32-bit color mode on all cards with all drivers also because the game looks much better on 256; 16-bit and 24-bit color modes than 32-bit color mode).

10: The driver installer freezes but the installer extracts the driver before the freezing and after a reboot you can install the driver by the extracted setup.exe installer.
